Fire prevention

Easier to prevent than to put out

Most fires can be prevented with simple habits. Here are the basics for the home and outdoors.

01At home

  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Fit a smoke alarm and test the battery regularly.
  • Don't overload extension leads and sockets.
  • Keep matches and lighters out of children's reach.
  • Have chimneys swept and stoves serviced regularly.

02Outdoors and around the house

  • Burning garden waste is only allowed in line with regulations and never in windy weather.
  • Never throw cigarette ends from cars or in nature.
  • Clear dry vegetation around houses and outbuildings.
  • In summer, follow wildfire danger warnings.

03If a fire breaks out

  1. 1.

    Get out

Bring yourself and others to safety. Don't go back for belongings.

  2. 2.

    Call 193 or 112

Calmly say what is burning, where, and whether people are in danger.

  3. 3.

    Follow instructions

Act on the instructions of the dispatcher and firefighters on site.
